EU member states are proposing sanctions against the Kremlin for the death of Alexei Navalny, who died in a Russian prison. The package may be named after the Russian opposition politician.

This was announced by the EU's chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, as reported by PAP.

"EU member states will definitely propose sanctions against those responsible," Borrell said.

He emphasized that the greatest responsibility lies with Vladimir Putin.

"But we can go further and cover (restrictions) the Russian penitentiary system. However, we will not forget who is truly responsible for Navalny's death," Borrell told journalists.

He also suggested naming the EU's human rights sanctions system after Navalny. "So that his name is forever reflected in the EU's human rights protection work," he added.

Borrell stated that the European Union must continue to support Ukraine.

"We must send a signal of support to the Russian opposition. Therefore, on both fronts, political and military, we must continue to support both Ukraine and the Russian people who want to live freely," Borrell emphasized.

EU foreign ministers will meet today in Brussels to discuss, among other things: military support for Ukraine and the 13th package of EU sanctions against Russia.

Over the weekend, Borrell announced that Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Navalny who died on February 16 in a camp in Russia's Far North, would participate in the meeting.
