If Russia attacks one of the Baltic states, the Czech Republic would be required under NATO’s Article 5 to deploy two of its mechanised brigades, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said in an interview with Deník.cz.
Babiš said he had met President Petr Pavel and discussed the security situation with him.
“We spoke very specifically. And, of course, if, God forbid, Russia attacks one of the Baltic states, then under Article 5 we have to send two of our mechanised brigades from Prostějov and Tábor,” the Prime Minister said.
Babiš added that the Czech Republic was prepared to act under such a scenario but declined to disclose details that are classified.
Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty states that an attack on one ally is considered an attack on all. However, it does not require every NATO member to provide the same military response: each country takes such action as it considers necessary.
Babiš’s statement specifies the military contribution Prague is considering in the event of a Russian attack on the Baltic states.
