According to NATO’s official website, on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden confirmed they will jointly finance a $500 million package of equipment and ammunition for Ukraine. The supplies will be provided from the United States under NATO’s new initiative called the “Priority Ukraine Requirements List” (PURL).

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the swift actions of the allies and their unwavering support for Ukraine.

“From the very first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden have steadfastly supported Ukraine. I commend the allies for their quick efforts to implement this initiative. The vital equipment and materials will be delivered to the frontline, strengthening Ukraine’s defenses and helping it resist aggression toward achieving lasting peace,” Rutte said.

The NATO press service added that the PURL initiative, like all allied efforts, is aimed at placing Ukraine in the strongest possible position amid peace efforts led by President Donald Trump and his administration.

According to a statement from the Swedish government, Sweden will contribute $275 million to the military support package, co-financed with Denmark and Norway.

At a press conference on August 5, Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson, Minister for Energy, Business, and Industry Ebba Busch, and Minister for Education and Integration Simona Mohamsson announced the government’s decision to allocate $275 million to continue funding Ukraine’s most urgent defense needs. The package includes air defense systems, ammunition for the Patriot missile defense systems, anti-tank systems, ammunition, and spare parts.

“We welcome the United States’ decision to provide Ukraine with defensive weapons, including the Patriot air defense system, and NATO’s coordination of aid. Ukraine urgently needs support from allies and partners to defend itself against Russian aggression,” Defense Minister Jonson said.

Minister Busch added that Sweden, together with Norway and Denmark, was able to quickly join forces to jointly finance the support package for Ukraine, while the United States “can supply unique weapons that Ukraine greatly needs.”

“Ukraine stands on the frontline of our freedom and democracy. That is why blue and yellow solidarity is now most important. We will stand with them as long as necessary, package after package—military and humanitarian. Together in NATO, together with Ukraine, we continue to defend freedom,” Mohamsson declared.

Since the full-scale Russian invasion began, Sweden has already sent military aid worth approximately 83 billion Swedish kronor to Ukraine.

Sweden’s contribution to the latest U.S. initiative comes from Sweden’s economic framework program dedicated to military support for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Norway’s Ministry of Defense announced that the government will provide about $135 million as part of the joint funding with Sweden and Denmark for a prioritized package of U.S. weapons for Ukraine coordinated by NATO within the PURL initiative.

“This is an important NATO and U.S. initiative. It helps ensure Ukraine quickly receives vital military equipment for self-defense and strengthens cooperation between the United States and European countries in supporting Ukraine,” said Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

The ministry’s press service reminded that the initiative consists of a series of aid packages formed by the U.S. in coordination with NATO and Ukraine, aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, including ammunition for Patriot systems and other critical components.

“This summer, we have seen Russia relentlessly continue its illegal attacks on Ukraine along the frontline and against civilian targets in cities. With this support, we aim to facilitate Ukraine’s swift receipt of necessary equipment while strengthening NATO cooperation on Ukraine’s defense,” stated Norwegian Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik.

It was also reported that Norway plans to provide about 85 billion Norwegian kroner in support to Ukraine and neighboring countries under the Nansen Program in 2025.

Denmark is allocating about $90 million to the NATO allies’ initiative to supply Ukraine with prioritized American weapons, the Danish Ministry of Defense said.

“The Danish government decided to allocate approximately $90 million to the NATO allies’ initiative to fund the delivery of urgently needed American weapons to Ukraine. Together with Norway and Sweden, Denmark will finance one of the first packages totaling $500 million,” the press service said.

Funds from Denmark are expected to be used for purchasing American air defense systems and artillery.

“Speed is crucial. That is why we decided to immediately allocate funds to this initiative. If Ukraine later needs additional financing, we are also ready to consider it,” said Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.

Meanwhile, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen recalled that Denmark has long played a leading role in supporting Ukraine to strengthen its position and to encourage Europe to take responsibility for increasing military assistance.

“Thanks to Denmark’s funding of military support, along with Norway and Sweden, we are providing Ukraine with priority weapon systems and once again emphasize that the Nordic countries are close and reliable allies within NATO. At the same time, we help preserve and strengthen the transatlantic cooperation that is key to our collective defense,” Rasmussen stated.
