Emmanuel Macron: There is a risk that this ceasefire will end up like the Minsk agreements

Following an emergency summit of European leaders, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that achieving peace in Ukraine is only possible if Russian aggression ceases and Ukraine receives strong and reliable security guarantees. He emphasized that without such guarantees, there is a risk of repeating the scenario of the Minsk agreements, which failed to bring lasting peace.

After the EU leaders' emergency summit, Macron held discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The French leader stressed that a lasting peace requires not only a ceasefire but also the establishment of solid security mechanisms for Ukraine. He warned that without such guarantees, any ceasefire agreement could be as ineffective as the Minsk accords, which did not prevent further escalation of the conflict.

"We will work on this together with all Europeans, Americans, and Ukrainians. This is the key. We are convinced that Europeans must invest better, more, and together in their security and defense—both for today and for the future."

Macron also underscored the need to reinforce European defense and accelerate the implementation of the EU’s sovereignty and security strategy, set at the 2022 Versailles Summit. He reaffirmed that the European Commission will continue supporting Ukraine and investing in Europe’s defense capabilities.
