As of January 1, Finland has assumed the chairmanship of Nordic defense cooperation (NORDEFCO), which will continue until the end of 2025, the Finnish Ministry of Defense announced on Friday.
"The Nordic countries remain our closest international partners. We share the same fundamental values, a common security environment and many security interests in our neighbouring areas. With the new Vision, our defence cooperation has entered a new era. It represents a major change for NORDEFCO and cooperation between our countries," says Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen
According to Häkkänen, the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO has created a strong and united region in Northern Europe, enhancing the deterrence and defense of the North Atlantic Alliance and strengthening its position in the region.
"As a result of Finland's and Sweden's membership, NATO now has a strong and united area in the north, which will strengthen the Alliance's deterrence and defence posture in Northern Europe," Häkkänen emphasized.
During Finland's chairmanship of NORDEFCO, efforts will focus on implementing new political concepts for Nordic defense cooperation through 2030.
Key priorities include enhancing interoperability and addressing critical aspects such as military mobility, logistics, supply chain resilience, and defense equipment.
