Finnish military intelligence, in its latest review, warned of a continuing threat to critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. According to the agency, Russia is highly likely to continue attempts to damage underwater communications, including cables and pipelines, Yle reports.
Analysts note that Moscow still has significant capabilities to use its fleet in the Baltic to exert large-scale influence over the region. Intelligence experts emphasize that the technical potential of Russian ships allows them to conduct complex operations on the seabed, creating persistent risks to the security of European countries.
Despite this activity in the Baltic Sea, Finnish intelligence does not see signs of an immediate military threat to Finland during the current year. This is due to the fact that the main resources of the Russian armed forces are currently engaged in combat operations in Ukraine.
However, the report includes a long-term forecast, according to which the situation could change after the active phase of the war ends. As the Russian army recovers and further develops, its ability to conduct full-scale military actions toward Finland will significantly increase. Thus, the temporary absence of a direct threat on land does not eliminate the need for enhanced monitoring of underwater infrastructure today.
