The leader of the German democratic opposition and candidate for chancellor from the CDU/CSU conservative bloc, Friedrich Merz, stated in Kyiv that Russian President Vladimir Putin will only engage in negotiations when Ukraine has the ability to defend itself.
Merz made this statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
Currently visiting Kyiv on Monday, December 9, Merz emphasized that his trip was to assess the situation in Ukraine and determine how Germany could provide support.
"The war in Ukraine must end as quickly as possible. Putin will only enter negotiations when Ukraine can defend itself," he stressed.
