Ukrainian defenders have withdrawn from the settlement of Siversk in Donetsk region “in order to preserve the lives of our soldiers and the combat capability of our units,” the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.
“Heavy fighting continues in the Siversk area. Russian forces have a significant advantage in manpower and equipment and, despite substantial losses, continue active offensive operations. In order to preserve the lives of our soldiers and the combat effectiveness of our units, Ukrainian defenders withdrew from the settlement. During the battles for Siversk, Ukraine’s Defense Forces exhausted the enemy; every meter of the city came at a high cost for the adversary,” the statement said on the General Staff’s Telegram channel.
According to the General Staff, Russian forces were able to advance due to their considerable numerical superiority and constant pressure by small assault groups under difficult weather conditions.
“The city remains under the fire control of our troops,” the statement noted.
The General Staff added that Russian units currently in the city are being targeted, their logistics are being disrupted, and Russian units are being blocked to prevent further advance.
Ukraine’s Defense Forces continue to carry out combat missions on the Sloviansk axis. All necessary measures are being taken to reduce the offensive potential of Russian units and formations, the General Staff reported.
