The company BGV Group Management, owned by Hennadiy Butkevych (co-owner of the ATB supermarket chain), has successfully tested a prototype lithium-ion battery made with Ukrainian graphite.

The company’s press service announced the development on Tuesday, May 20.

“As part of the pilot graphite project BGV Graphite, a research sample of anode material for a lithium-ion battery was tested. The results of the electrochemical performance tests meet the highest global standards,” the statement said.

The anode was based on spherical graphite derived from enriched concentrate extracted at the Balakhivske deposit in the Kirovohrad region. The spheroidization of the graphite was carried out in October 2024 at the facilities of the German company Netzsch.

The sample anode material was produced by the Department of Chemical Technologies and Resource Conservation at the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design. The prototype was a standard 20 mm diameter, 1.6 mm thick lithium coin cell battery.

The next step will be the development of a full-fledged two-electrode battery prototype (with a cathode) in the autumn of 2025.

“We are steadily moving along the path of building a complete lithium-ion battery production chain in Ukraine — from raw material extraction to the manufacture of energy storage components. The current laboratory testing is an important technological stage. The next step will be the development of a full-fledged two-electrode battery prototype. We plan to produce it as early as autumn 2025, using graphite extracted by BGV,” said Viktor Tanai, head of the BGV Graphite project.
