In Kyiv region, the Biologist Wine Company has begun planting Riesling seedlings brought from Moldova. This grape variety is unusual for the region, but the winemakers are convinced that it represents the future.
The chosen location is a slope with excellent sun exposure, rich soil, and a fresh microclimate—ideal conditions for this noble grape variety.
“We believe that it is here that Riesling will be able to reveal its true character: refined, vibrant, with mineral notes and balanced acidity. This is just the beginning. We’re not simply planting grapes—we’re laying the foundation for the future of great Ukrainian wine,” wrote the founder of Biologist, Ihor Petrenko.
The post on the Biologist Wine Company’s page notes that the seedlings are strong and healthy and are quickly adapting to the local soil.
“Riesling is elegant, aromatic, and full of character. Although we have to wait for the harvest, this is an important moment: when everything is just beginning,” the company says.
Growing Riesling in the Kyiv region is a bold move, as the variety requires a specific microclimate—cool temperatures, sharp day-night contrasts, and perfect soil drainage. That’s why in Ukraine, Riesling is typically planted in Zakarpattia or the southern parts of the Odessa region.
“In the Odessa region, it’s currently too hot, and white grape varieties aren’t doing well. The situation is getting worse every year, so we’re reinvesting our profits into new vineyards here in the north,” the winemaker concludes.
