Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Kyiv on Sunday, August 24, for a visit coinciding with Ukraine’s Independence Day.

The news was announced by Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, on Telegram.

“On this special day — Ukraine’s Independence Day — it is important for us to feel the support of our friends. And Canada is always by our side. We value your help and solidarity. It gives us strength in our struggle and on the path to our shared victory. Together we are stronger,” Yermak stated, sharing a video of Carney’s arrival at the Kyiv railway station.

In a post on X, the Canadian Prime Minister wrote:

“On this Ukrainian Independence Day, and at this critical moment in their nation’s history, Canada is stepping up our support and our efforts towards a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.”

Carney also released a short video address dedicated to Ukraine’s Independence Day.

“Canada was one of the first countries to recognize Ukraine as a sovereign state. Since then, Canada and Ukraine have built a lasting bilateral friendship based on shared values of peace, security, and democracy. Over a million Ukrainian Canadians call Canada their home, so every triumph and tragedy on Ukrainian soil is deeply felt here,” he said.

Carney reaffirmed Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine, adding:

“We stand with you every step of the way in defending your sovereignty and fulfilling your dreams for your country.”
