Next year, Estonia will begin constructing a defense line along its border with Russia, including the building of 600 bunkers in the border areas with the aggressor country.
This was reported by ERR.
According to Kadi-Kai Kollo, the head of the infrastructure department of the country's State Defense Investment Center, the bunkers will first undergo testing. Based on the results, one type of bunker will be selected, and a tender will be announced for the construction of bunkers along the entire defense line.
She noted that the requirements for the protective structures were determined by taking into account the experience of Russia's war against Ukraine. Specifically, each bunker must accommodate up to ten soldiers with equipment and have space for provisions. Concrete has been chosen as the primary material.
The locations of the bunkers will be determined by the end of the year.
"If we need to approach private landowners, we will start negotiations with them around the end of this year or the beginning of next year. However, our first preference is to establish these support points on state land," said Kadi-Kai Kollo.
In addition to bunkers, the defense structures will include anti-tank barriers or concrete dragon's teeth, barbed wire, and anti-tank mines, which will not be installed during peacetime.
The estimated cost of the defense line is 60 million euros.
