Germany will transfer another Patriot surface-to-air missile (SAM) system to Ukraine.
This was reported by N-TV.
"Due to the further increase in the number of Russian airstrikes on Ukraine, the German government has decided to further strengthen Ukrainian air defense," N-TV quoted a statement from the German Ministry of Defense.
According to N-TV, the German Armed Forces have already provided Ukraine with two Patriot systems. It is worth noting that Ukraine received the first Patriot system from Germany in April 2023, and the second one in December of the same year.
President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and thanked him for the Patriot system.
"I am grateful to the Chancellor for the decision to supply an additional Patriot system to Ukraine and missiles for the existing air defense systems. Thank you, Olaf, for your leadership! This is a real demonstration of support for Ukraine in a critical time for us. I call on all other leaders of partner countries to follow this example," the president wrote in his Telegram channel.
Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Ukraine has been working on strengthening its air defense systems, urging partners to transfer their installations capable of shooting down Russian missiles and drones.
However, Ukraine's need for air defense has intensified following the resumption of Russian strikes on energy facilities. Germany has promised to assist Ukraine in finding air defense systems. Berlin stated that the German government will review its stockpiles and search worldwide for systems that could be sent to Ukraine.
As President Volodymyr Zelensky stated, to completely close the Ukrainian sky to Russian drones and missiles, 25 Patriot systems are needed.
