The energy company Electrica, the largest electricity supplier in Romania, has become a victim of a cyberattack, the company reported. Specialists are currently working to eliminate the consequences of the incident in cooperation with national cybersecurity authorities, according to Digi24.

Electrica clarified that critical company systems were not affected. However, consumers are recommended to remain cautious and not share personal information via unsecured channels or in response to suspicious messages purportedly sent by the company.

According to Romania’s Ministry of Energy, the attackers used ransomware for the attack. Specialists have extracted digital objects related to the attack to identify its source.

Government agencies continue to investigate the incident and are implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Electrica provides services to over 4 million users and manages distribution networks across three major regions of the country: Northern and Southern Transylvania, as well as Northern Muntenia. The incident has raised concerns within the energy sector given the company’s scale and its importance to the country’s infrastructure.
