In Odessa, the wooden doors of the late 19th-century house of Odessa engineer Emil Krechmar, located at 21 Bunin Street, have been restored, according to the "1000 Doors of Odesa" project.
Traditional restoration methods were used to restore the doors. Wrought iron grilles and relief elements of the doors were restored, and brass door handles "appropriate to the era" were selected, according to the project. Additionally, replicas of historical fittings were reproduced to match the original design.
The doors were also restored from the entrance side. A reproduced plank in the center of the doors with decorative elements protects the entrance and maintains the room's temperature. Brass inserts at the bottom of the doors also protect against moisture and damage.
The "1000 Doors of Odessa" project, aimed at preserving the ancient doors of the city, was launched in February 2019. Among the team's goals is the restoration of as many doors as possible, a process that can take up to six months. To achieve this, they utilize funds from patrons in Odessa and other cities in Ukraine and around the world.
