Katarína Mathernová: EU embassies have no plans to leave Kyiv

The EU Delegation and the European Union Advisory Mission in Ukraine, as well as the embassies of EU member states, have no plans to leave Kyiv because of Russian attacks, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová said.

“I am not aware of any embassy that is leaving — and certainly not any embassy of an EU member state. I do not know what sources The Guardian used, but I am not aware of any embassy that is currently leaving; quite the opposite,” she said.

Mathernová stressed that she is in contact with the diplomatic missions of 25 EU member states and confirmed that they, together with the EU Delegation and the European Union Advisory Mission, are remaining in Kyiv. She added that her team constantly assesses the security situation, but said the latest threats from Russia have not changed their approach.

“I think Putin’s rhetoric is a consequence of the lack of success on the battlefield. He is escalating his rhetoric and threats — against civilians and diplomats, as well as EU countries. I believe this is a sign of frustration that he did not act more decisively and failed to achieve his strategic objectives — to subjugate Ukraine within a few weeks,” Mathernová said.
