Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov commented on the decision of the International Court of Justice regarding the accusations against Russia of financing terrorism.
The comments of the head of Ukrainian intelligence were published in the pages of the French publication "Liberation".
This concerns the decision of the International Court of Justice on January 31, 2024, in the case "Ukraine v. Russia", where Moscow, among other things, was accused of violating the norms of the Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism.
According to the interpretation of the Court, Russia cannot be recognized as a sponsor of terrorism because the Russian Buk missile system, which in 2014 killed 298 civilian passengers and crew members of the MH-17 Boeing, is a weapon, not money.
"This is a disgrace to the international judicial system, this decision of the court is a mistake and a disaster. Disregarding obvious facts will have very important consequences, especially for many civilized countries," - said Kyrylo Budanov.
According to him, the Court's decision poses serious risks:
"[It turns out that] if the aggressor state gives [terrorist fighters] missile systems, but not money, and they shoot down a civilian Boeing, then, in principle, it will not be terrorism," - explained Kyrylo Budanov.
