In Ukraine, 585 organ transplantations were conducted throughout 2023, as reported by the Ministry of Health.
During the year, three new types of transplantations were performed for the first time, including pancreatic transplantation, split liver transplantation (where a donor organ is divided and transplanted to two recipients), and lung transplantation.
The number of bone marrow transplantations increased to 340 this year, marking an increase of 117 operations compared to 2022.
Furthermore, there was an increase in the number of living consents for post-mortem donation and consents for donation from relatives diagnosed with brain death, according to the Ministry of Health.
Starting from February 2023, immunosuppressive drugs were added to the list of medicines that can be obtained for free or with a small copayment. This opportunity was utilized by 1055 patients, and 4459 prescriptions were issued throughout the year.
Since January, the medical guarantee program for stem cell transplantation has been in effect. Within the program, the National Health Service of Ukraine will cover the costs of transplantation services based on the transplanted organ, along with separate payments for periods before and after the operation. For example, for heart transplantation services, the National Health Service of Ukraine will pay over two million hryvnias, and for lung transplantation – over 2.6 million hryvnias.
