As a result of close cooperation between the Security Service of Ukraine, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, and law enforcement agencies in Poland, a Polish citizen who collaborated with the Russian military intelligence (GRU) has been detained.
According to the investigation, the detainee's intention was to gather and transmit information about the security of the Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport to the aggressor country. Among other things, this was intended to assist Russian special services in planning a possible assassination attempt on the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, during his stay in Poland.
SSU operatives and Ukrainian prosecutors informed their Polish counterparts about the potential assassination plot and provided them with key evidence in this case as part of international legal assistance.
Thanks to successful actions and operational information exchange between the countries, the recruited agent of the Russian special services was identified and detained on Polish territory.
The Polish prosecutor's office has charged him with readiness to act in favor of a foreign intelligence service, which is classified under Article 130 § 3 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Poland.
On April 18, 2024, at the request of the Polish prosecutor's office, the District Court of Warsaw applied a pre-trial detention measure against the perpetrator.
The investigation is being conducted by the Internal Security Agency under the supervision of the National Prosecutor's Office of Poland. Investigative actions are ongoing.
The SSU expresses gratitude to its partners for effective cooperation in countering Russian crimes in Ukraine and beyond its borders.
