Serhiy 'Flash' Beskrestnov: Russia uses EW systems to jam Starlink communications

Ukrainian military forces are recording the use of Russian electronic warfare (EW) systems against Starlink satellite communications, according to Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, an advisor to Ukraine’s Minister of Defence, who wrote about it on Facebook.

According to him, Russia has been experimenting with suppressing Starlink using EW systems since the early days of the full-scale war. The first recorded instance of such interference occurred in 2023 on the Kharkiv direction, after which the Russian system was detected by Ukrainian forces and destroyed. No mass repeated use was recorded until 2026.

“After Ukraine began striking Russian logistics with mid-range strikes, we again started detecting EW activity against the Starlink communication system. Of course, we identify and will continue to identify such enemy systems and destroy them,” Beskrestnov said.

According to the defence adviser, the Russian EW system is called Volna Kupol Garant and, according to his data, is produced by LLC Russian Kupol in Simferopol.

He describes the system as working by creating powerful ground-based interference directed at satellites, which suppresses the Starlink signal. It is also claimed that the system operates in the 14–14.5 GHz range and uses multi-channel antennas to generate jamming signals.

According to him, a single EW complex can affect a satellite passing over the area, covering up to 20 square kilometers. The system is mounted on six trailers, can operate from generators or external power, and can be deployed either in mobile or stationary configuration.
