The Russian occupation administration is destroying the Khan's Palace in Bakhchisarai, an architectural monument reports the Minister of Culture of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko.
"The occupiers are destroying it [the palace]. They are dismantling the roof and ensemble of colored stained-glass windows of the Golden Cabinet, replacing the old roof with modern building materials. In other words, they are erasing the national memory with a new building," he said.
The Ministry of Culture drew UNESCO's attention to the actions of Russia, as a permanent member of the organization.
The Khan's Palace in Bakhchisarai is a monument of national importance, the only example of Crimean Tatar palace architecture in the world, built in 1532-1783.
In 2017, the Russian Federation, which occupied Crimea, began "repair and restoration" work on the monument, resulting in authentic materials being replaced with modern ones.
In 2021, UNESCO published a report in which it recognized that the "restoration" of the Khan's Palace poses a "threat of destroying the historical and cultural value of the monument."
