All components of international legal mechanisms for holding Russia accountable for crimes committed in Ukraine are already operational. What is needed is constant attention and joint decisive actions, emphasizes Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin.
"To our partners: it is crucial that support for Ukraine on the path to justice remains constant because this is work for years and perhaps decades. This includes supporting our efforts both domestically and in the application of international legal mechanisms. All components of these mechanisms are already functioning; what is required is only continuous attention and joint decisive actions," said the Prosecutor General in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine, speaking about the message he wishes to convey to international partners.
According to the Prosecutor General, there will be no stops on the "legal front."
"I believe this is impossible because what we are doing for Ukraine and Ukrainians, we are doing for the entire civilized world, which is built on the principles of freedom, democracy, respect for the law, and justice. Without this, the civilized world simply cannot exist," emphasized the Prosecutor General.
He also pointed out that many instruments of war used as weapons in aggression against Ukraine are also employed by international terrorist organizations.
"Therefore, the practice of cooperation helps not only in investigating war crimes but also in countering crimes that terrorist organizations may commit," explained Kostin.
Responding to a question about what he would like to say to Ukrainians awaiting the accountability of Russians, the Prosecutor General said,
"We are on the path to justice, endeavoring to restore it right now. It's also important to understand that this is work for years and perhaps decades."
