The mayor of Dniprorudne, Yevhen Matveyev, who was abducted by the Russian forces in March 2022, has died in captivity.

On March 13, 2022, Yevhen was informed that a bus carrying workers from the Zaporizhzhia Iron Ore Plant had been stopped by the Russian troops at a checkpoint. He went to the scene, where the miners were released, but the mayor was taken captive. His fate remained unknown until recently.

Known for his determination and principles, Yevhen stayed in the city during the occupation, refusing to abandon its residents. He worked tirelessly to maintain the community’s essential services.

His body was returned during the most recent prisoner exchange.
