Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) have exposed corruption involving the mayor of Sumy and the director of the city's Infrastructure Department.
These officials were found to be demanding bribes from local entrepreneurs in exchange for allowing them to conduct their businesses in the city without hindrance.
It was documented that they extorted money from a local company involved in waste removal. The individuals demanded 2,130,000 Ukrainian hryvnias from the entrepreneur. In case of refusal to pay, they threatened to create artificial obstacles to the business.
The SSU and NABU arrested both individuals in the act of receiving an illegal benefit of 1.4 million Ukrainian hryvnias.
Currently, the question of notifying them of suspicion under Article 368, Part 4, of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (acceptance of an offer, promise, or receipt of an unlawful benefit by a public official) is being resolved. Later, preventive measures will be selected for these officials.
The exposure of these criminals was conducted under the procedural guidance of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office.
