Another 19 Ukrainian cultural heritage sites have been added to the International List of Cultural Values under enhanced protection by UNESCO.
This was reported by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.
The decision was made by the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict at its meeting on December 4.
The sites include:
- Akkerman Fortress in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Odessa region
- Assumption Cathedral in Kharkiv
- Intercession Church in Kharkiv
- Kharkiv Academic Ukrainian Drama Theater named after Taras Shevchenko
- Boris and Gleb Cathedral in Chernihiv
- L.E. Koenig Estate: Palace (Main House) in Trostianets, Sumy region
- Movchansky Monastery in Putyvl, Sumy region
- Resurrection Church
- Transfiguration Cathedral
- Trinity Cathedral in Sumy
- Kyrylivska Church in Kyiv
- Settlement of the chronicle city of Iskorosten in Korosten, Zhytomyr region
- Archaeological complex "Baidar Island" in Zaporizhzhia
- Museum of Arts of Prykarpattia in Ivano-Frankivsk
- Kircha Building (Church of St. Paul)
- Potemkin Stairs in Odessa
- Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art
- Odesa National Art Museum
- Odesa National Scientific Library
This brings the total number of Ukrainian sites on the List of Cultural Values under enhanced protection to 46.
As noted by Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna, this makes Ukraine “one of the countries with the largest number of cultural heritage sites under the highest international legal protection in the field of humanitarian law.”
“We will continue to work on expanding the list of sites under enhanced protection and strengthening international legal mechanisms for the protection of cultural values,” the deputy prime minister said.
