The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine, funded by the European Union (EU) and the Government of Japan, has announced the transfer of equipment for waste management to 19 communities in Ukraine.
Communities in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, and Kherson will receive 52 garbage trucks and 63 pieces of heavy machinery for debris clearance, including dump trucks, crawler and wheeled excavators, as well as two types of loaders.
• 35 garbage trucks and 4 pieces of heavy machinery, jointly funded by the EU and the Government of Japan, for 12 communities in the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions;
• 17 garbage trucks, 4 dump trucks, and 8 pieces of debris management equipment, supported by the Government of Japan, for Chernihiv and 5 communities in the region;
• 41 pieces of heavy machinery funded by the Government of Japan for the Kherson region Communal Emergency Rescue Service, which will operate in several communities in the region;
• Equipment sets supported by the EU for the processing of demolition waste, including sorting and crushing machines, for the Bucha, Chernihiv, and Mykolaiv communities;
• 28,000 waste containers and equipment for processing solid household waste for the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions, funded by the EU and the Government of Japan.
During the equipment handover ceremony, delegates visited a demolition waste management site in the Bucha community of the Kyiv region, which was set up with support from UNDP and the EU.
The initiative aims to create one of Ukraine's first full-cycle demolition waste processing sites, capable of processing over 75,000 cubic meters of waste collected at a temporary waste storage site in Bucha. UNDP and the EU provide strategic support, expertise, training for workers, and equipment.
Anna Yurchenko, Deputy Minister for Community Development, Territories, and Infrastructure of Ukraine for European Integration, expressed gratitude to UNDP, the EU, and the Government of Japan for providing waste management equipment and emphasized its importance: "In most communities, especially those that have experienced occupation, communal machinery has been destroyed, and what remains is old, requiring repair and replacement. Communities urgently need equipment for debris clearance and garbage trucks to make life comfortable again, and residents have the opportunity to return home.
