Latvia has completed the construction of a 280-kilometer fence along its border with Russia, which is an important part of the country’s external security infrastructure.
This was reported by LSM.
The work took several years and was completed in December. Six construction contractors participated in the project.
Building a fence of this length has become one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects in the field of national security.
The total budget amounted to 166 million euros. In some swampy areas, the process was particularly difficult, and the fence had to be installed practically on pontoons.
An additional 20 million euros will be spent next year on developing infrastructure for patrolling and technical monitoring systems, with this work expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Currently, border guards and representatives of Latvia’s Ministry of Interior are conducting joint inspections of the completed fence and checking its quality.
The Border Guard service noted that the situation on the Latvia-Russia border is generally stable, but there are occasional cases of illegal crossings. According to border guards, the new fence will significantly facilitate border security.
