Lithuania plans to extend temporary residency permits for Ukrainian refugees for an additional year, according to Lithuanian broadcaster LRT.
The Ministry of the Interior of Lithuania has prepared a draft government decree to extend the temporary protection period for Ukrainian refugees.
"Current permits are valid until March 4, 2025, but with the proposed amendment, permits could be issued until March 4, 2026," the document, signed by Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė, states.
According to the Migration Department, between 30 and 40 new applications for temporary residence permits are registered daily. Currently, over 44,300 individuals hold valid temporary protection permits in Lithuania.
The extension of the permit issuance period will reduce the administrative burden on Ukrainians and lighten the load on the Migration Department, facilitating the permit renewal process before March 4, 2025, as some individuals will already have longer-term permits. This proposal aligns with a broader European decision made in June of this year.
