The long-awaited 27th annual New German Cinema Festival, one of the oldest film screenings in Ukraine, will start again in Odessa and will take place at the Cinema City complex from October 28 to November 1.
The film review program, which the Goethe-Institut conducts in Ukraine together with Arthouse Traffic and the Bavarian House Odessa, includes five films, including the Berlinale, Cannes, and a film co-produced with Ukraine.
All films are shown in the original language with Ukrainian subtitles. This year the location of the festival is Cinema City (Address: 4, Semaphore Lane).

Schachnovelle | The Royal Game

The festival opens with the film "The Royal Game" - a film adaptation of the novel "Chess Novel" by the famous Austrian writer Stefan Zweig. The events of this historical drama directed by Philipp Stölzl unfold in 1938 in Nazi-occupied Austria. The protagonist is arrested and, imprisoned in solitary confinement, learns to play chess - a game that will save him. The film was awarded the Bavarian Film Prize for Best Acting (Oliver Mazucci) and Production.

Rivale | Rival

The audience will also see the film "Rival" - a work by Marcus Lenz, created in a co-production of Germany and Ukraine. According to the plot of the picture, nine-year-old Roman goes to his mother, an illegal worker, to Germany, where the woman lives with a 62-year-old widower. The boy competes for his mother's attention, and when she falls ill, he is left alone with his opponent. The film received the Award for the best cinematography of the Listapad International Film Festival and a Special Diploma of the Odessa International Film Festival jury.

Eric Schmitt's adventure comedy "Cleo", a participant in the Berlinale competition program, will guide modern and historical Berlin. The main character tries to cope with the misfortunes that befell her loved ones from birth. With three funny companions, the girl goes in search of her past in the German capital.

The biographical drama "Fassbinder", selected in 2020 for the official competition programme of the Cannes Film Festival, will tell about the formation of one of the key figures of German cinema. In his film, Oskar Roehler recreated the beginning of the career of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who long after his short life will be called a genius director and an incredible thug at the same time.

The festival program also includes the film "Ãkozid" by Andres Veiel, which deals with topical environmental issues. This is a humorous anti-utopia about the near future, in which the subject of litigation is a climate crisis. Politicians and businessmen are facing representatives of the southern countries in the International Court of Justice, which is taking place in Berlin because The Hague is suffering from storms.
