On the night of October 16, the Russian Federation carried out another combined attack, targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, particularly in the gas sector.
This was reported on live broadcast by Yuriy Ihnat, Head of Communications for the Ukrainian Air Force.
“The main focus of the strike was on our energy sector, this time in the gas sphere. Gas extraction sites and distribution stations were hit. The enemy has once again shown its intention—to deprive us of energy and heat in our homes during the autumn-winter period,” Ihnat said.
He noted that similar attacks have occurred during this same period in previous years, affecting facilities in Poltava, Kharkiv, and western regions of Ukraine.
“This time, in addition to 320 strike drones of the Shahed, Gerbera, and other types, 37 missiles were used. Most of them were ballistic missiles: 28 missiles on ballistic trajectories—two Kinzhal and 26 Iskander-M,” said Ihnat.
According to Ihnat, such missiles can only be intercepted by systems capable of countering ballistic targets, such as Patriot complexes. However, the exact number and availability of these systems remain uncertain.
“The enemy used 320 drones today, and about 200 of them were Shaheds; the rest were Gerbera and other types,” he concluded.
