The largest number of companies operating in the construction sector are concentrated in Kyiv (2,489), Dnipropetrovsk (880), Kyiv region (865), Lviv (788), and Odessa (658) regions.
This is stated in a YouControl.Market study.
“This concentration is explained by a high level of urbanization, active residential and commercial construction, a significant number of investment projects, as well as a large number of clients both in the private and public sectors,” analysts noted.
At the same time, Zhytomyr (173), Sumy (158), Chernihiv (143), Ternopil (128), and Chernivtsi (115) regions have the fewest construction companies.
Experts say this can be explained by lower urbanization levels, limited investment inflows, and less demand for large-scale construction projects.
Partly, the situation is likely influenced by geographic location: some regions like Sumy, Chernihiv, Kherson have suffered significant impacts from military actions, experts believe. Others have a more agrarian-oriented economy, which reduces the need for large volumes of construction work.
Meanwhile, the largest number of individual entrepreneurs (IEs) working in construction are concentrated in Kyiv (2,101), Kyiv region (1,855), Lviv (1,583), Dnipropetrovsk (1,487), and Ivano-Frankivsk (1,409) regions.
“Likely reasons for this concentration are that Kyiv and Kyiv region are centers of large volumes of construction and repair, with high purchasing power of the population and numerous private orders,” the study says.
Conversely, Volyn (614), Rivne (602), Sumy (580), Kirovohrad (524), and Ternopil (471) regions have the fewest registered IEs in construction. This is probably due to lower volumes of large construction orders and predominantly local labor markets, analysts believe.
They also note that for some regions, migration of the workforce is an additional factor — many specialists leave to work in other regions or abroad, reducing the number of active entrepreneurs locally. Limited investments in large infrastructure projects may also play a role.
According to YouControl.Market analytics, in 2021 the construction companies market showed peak activity — the number of registered enterprises (2,958) was almost a third higher than the average in other years.
In 2022, there was a sharp decline — the number of newly registered construction companies almost halved, with 1,492 companies registered. Main possible factors included military actions, infrastructure destruction, relocation of population and businesses, reduced purchasing power, and overall market uncertainty.
Analytics show that the first half of 2025 already indicates that the number of registered construction companies is half the level of 2021 — 1,401.
“This dynamic indicates a noticeable market revival. This probably reflects an increase in reconstruction volumes and investor activation,” experts believe.
In the segment of IEs working in construction, the only significant drop was observed in 2022 — then the number of newly registered IEs (3,518) decreased sharply due to the start of the full-scale invasion.
According to the study, the figures for the first half of 2025 already exceed half the average annual value of previous years — 3,116 registered IEs in construction as of August 2025.
“If this trend continues, the year may become one of the most active in recent times. This may indicate growing demand for private construction teams and individual services, driven by active rebuilding, repairs, etc.,” experts conclude.
