The Moldovan government approved the country’s military strategy for 2025–2035 at a meeting on Wednesday, Rupor.md reports.

The draft strategy includes a program of technological modernization, strengthening of defense capabilities, and bringing the army in line with European and international standards.

Overall, the document identifies 18 priority directions aimed at the comprehensive development of the country’s armed forces.

The strategy states that the development of military capabilities will be carried out in accordance with the principle of neutrality and exclusively defensive security policy of the Republic of Moldova. The government plans to gradually increase budgetary allocations for defense while modernizing the army’s organizational and technological structure.

The goal of the strategy is to create an effective, professional armed force compatible with Western standards.

The document also foresees modernization of command, control and communications systems, an expanded role for the armed forces in managing internal crises, and contributions to regional security.

A key element of the new strategy is bringing Moldova closer to the European Union’s defense standards and participating in international peacekeeping missions under the UN, OSCE, and EU.

According to Prime Minister Dorin Recean, whenever decisions on national defense are made, “hysterical voices” appear that have kept this sphere “in poverty and disorder.”

“We have a very clear goal — to invest primarily in people and in the National Army of the Republic of Moldova. They understand that they are still being kept weak, and that, of course, benefits the aggressor state. We see how they glorify the Kremlin, but forget to say that the Kremlin spends 7% of GDP on war and 32% of its budget. 32%! — people, that means that every third dollar of the Kremlin’s budget goes to killing children, young people and civilians in Ukraine. Therefore, we will continue to develop the National Army, defend our homeland and contribute to peace and global security,” Recean added.
