Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. He thanked the IAEA for its missions at Ukrainian nuclear power plants and agreed to strengthen their work, including at other key energy facilities.

Zelensky also expressed gratitude for the IAEA’s support of Ukraine’s nuclear expansion strategy at the Khmelnytskyi NPP.

“The completion of this project is key to Ukraine’s energy independence and regional stability. It’s crucial that Ukrainian MPs support it,” Zelensky stated.

The meeting included a detailed discussion on the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP. Zelensky emphasized the importance of restoring Ukrainian control over the plant and invited international partners to collaborate in the energy sector.

“We welcome our partners to work with us in this direction—this is mutually beneficial. Strengthening Europe’s energy security will also reinforce our ties with America,” he added.

A special focus was given to the role of the IAEA in securing the release of Ukrainian hostages taken by Russian occupiers in Enerhodar.

“We expect the IAEA to be proactive in efforts to free these Ukrainian citizens,” Zelensky stressed.
