The Russian forces has significantly reduced the use of heavy equipment due to the risk of destruction, instead increasing the deployment of light vehicles, drones, and electronic warfare systems.

This was reported on-air by National Guard spokesperson Ruslan Muzychuk.

“During the summer fighting period, enemy losses in armored vehicles were relatively low compared to winter and spring. In August, the enemy lost 110 combat armored vehicles, whereas from January to April, losses were around 600. This is primarily due to the use of drones. The enemy understands that the survivability of heavy equipment during assaults is short, so they increasingly rely on infantry groups and light vehicles. The number of vehicles remains consistently high—over the summer, Ukrainian forces destroyed an average of more than 3,000 enemy vehicles. Currently, these are one of the main maneuverable assets: fast, mobile, compact equipment like buggies and motorcycles,” Muzychuk said.

He also noted that both sides have significantly increased drone use and the deployment of new models.

“The number of drones and tactics for their use is growing—not only for the enemy but also on our side, where capabilities are changing and expanding. Electronic reconnaissance and countermeasure systems are also appearing, having a major impact on the battlefield. With the growing number of new-type drones, the frequency of infantry assaults and the organization of defensive formations are affected. Since the beginning of this year, the number of drones used by National Guard units has tripled. These include various models, from EPVs to drones conducting aerial reconnaissance or carrying combat payloads,” Muzychuk explained.
