Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine conducted a multi-stage special operation in Kyiv region, as a result of which another agent of the main intelligence directorate of the Russian General Staff was detained.
The offender turned out to be the director of the department of one of the capital's insurance companies, whom the Russian military intelligence remotely recruited after the start of the full-scale invasion by the aggressor country.
Under the guise of running an insurance business, the official initiated personal meetings with the heads of Kyiv's energy-generating enterprises under the pretext of concluding insurance contracts. However, in reality, he used this "topic" as an excuse to gather maximum information from his counterparts about the facts and consequences of Russian "attacks" on Ukrainian critical infrastructure objects. Above all, he was interested in information about the scale of damages and the current technical condition of the power plants in Kyiv that were attacked by the aggressor.
All the gathered intelligence information was transmitted by the hostile agent to his Moscow "handler" through a messenger – a personnel member of the Russian GRU. The intelligence information was needed for the preparation and adjustment of repeated air strikes on the energy enterprises in the capital during the heating season.
SSU officers detained the Russian agent at his place of residence in one of the settlements in Kyiv region. During the search of the detainee's premises, a mobile phone that he used in reconnaissance and subversive activities in favor of Russia was found.
The perpetrator is currently in custody. The investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime. The perpetrator faces life imprisonment
