Ukraine is currently unable to fully meet its garlic consumption needs and covers only 30% of its demand for this vegetable. However, with systematic development of the sector and the construction of storage facilities for garlic, a higher level of self-sufficiency can be achieved.

This was shared with AgroPortal.ua by the president of the Ukrainian Garlic Producers Association, Julianna Mussa, a representative of the Dutch company Gourmet, which specializes in growing garlic and onions.

The expert noted that over the past three years, the area dedicated to garlic cultivation in Ukraine has significantly decreased due to the occupation of territories in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. Currently, garlic is grown on about 1,000 to 1,500 hectares. However, it is difficult to calculate the exact areas, as many small farms and family-run enterprises are involved in the process, growing garlic without documentation and not registering it.

"The storage problem remains acute; there is a need for quality storage facilities. Unfortunately, Ukraine still lacks professional storage facilities in sufficient numbers," said Julianna Mussa.

She also added that many Ukrainian farmers have abandoned garlic cultivation due to losses, not learning how to grow it properly, and failing to find markets for their products.
