Ukraine ranks 28th in the world in wine production.
This information comes from the Center for Social and Economic Research CASE Ukraine.
"As of 2022, we produced 660 thousand hectoliters or 0.26% of the global wine market," the experts state.
Italy ranks first with 49.843 million hectoliters (19.3%). France is second with 45.59 million (17.65%). Spain is third with 35.7 million (13.83%).
Analysts have cited reasons why Ukraine produces so little wine despite its land area and climate:
- During the fight against alcoholism, the Soviet Union destroyed valuable vineyards.
- Russia occupied Crimea in 2014, turning regions with vineyards (primarily Kherson and Mykolaiv regions) into front-line zones.
- The absence of a land market until 2020 and the current restriction on land acquisition by legal entities and foreign investors.
