The Embassy of Italy in Ukraine responded to the massive attack by Russian forces on Odesa on the night of July 24, expressing support for the city.

This was stated in the embassy’s post on X (formerly Twitter).

“New Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, new victims and injuries. Significant destruction in Odessa, which is a UNESCO heritage site with its monuments and history. We stand with Ukraine and Odesa, including within Italy’s patronage of the city and region,” the embassy said.

In Odessa, seven cultural heritage sites were damaged as a result of a Russian shelling, four of which are national heritage monuments, according to the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications.

“On Thursday, July 24, as a result of a massive missile strike by the Russian Armed Forces on the city of Odessa, seven cultural heritage sites were damaged, four of which have the status of national heritage monuments. These sites are located in the historic center of Odessa, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The destruction caused by this attack poses a serious threat to the preservation of the city’s cultural and historical heritage,” the statement reads.

 

The following sites were affected:

  • Vorontsov Palace – Vorontsov Lane, 2. National architectural monument.
  • Palace – Prymorsky Boulevard, 9. National architectural monument.
  • Rodokanakis House, housing the Hotel de Versal – Prymorsky Boulevard, 10. National architectural monument.
  • Londonskaya Hotel building – Prymorsky Boulevard, 11. National architectural monument.
  • Building of the Merchants’ Administration – Staroportofrankivska Street, 36 (corner of Kolontayivska Street).
  • Fruktovyi Passage – Pryvozna Street, 14.
  • Odessa-Port Station building – Prymorska Street, 8.

As a result of the attack, windows, doors, building facades, roofs, floor slabs, and structural elements were damaged by the blast wave and debris.
