Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin has called on the international community to put an end to conflicts, including the war in Ukraine. He made the remarks during a press briefing at the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in Rome, according to Vatican News.
Parolin emphasized that “everyone’s contribution is truly necessary to take steps toward peace” in Ukraine. He urged both caution and hope regarding the war, noting that it is “not easy to answer” questions about the measures needed to achieve a ceasefire.
“If we knew, we would already have taken them. I believe that some negotiations are underway, perhaps not publicly,” Parolin suggested.
Reiterating his hope that these talks will yield results, the Vatican Secretary of State stressed the need for broad international support.
“The involvement of the United States is certainly needed, and we hope that Europe will take on a more prominent role. China, too, has something to say—in fact, President Trump is currently in China and the Far East to address this point. Everyone’s contribution is truly needed to take a few steps towards peace,” he said.
He also noted that China “also has something to say” and mentioned that U.S. President Donald Trump, currently in the Far East, should discuss steps to end the war.
