Ukraine has 15 underground schools in frontline regions, with plans to commission 180 more by the end of the year, said Deputy Minister of Education and Science Nadiya Kuzmychova.
“We have over 13,000 schools across the country. About 80% of schools are equipped with various civil defense structures or basic shelters,” Kuzmychova said during a national telethon broadcast on Friday.
According to her, the remaining 20% include schools in Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions, where basic shelters do not guarantee safety and anti-radiation shelters need to be built.
She also noted that underground schools (anti-radiation shelters) are being constructed exclusively in frontline territories.
“When it comes to the number already built, there are 15. Of those, eight are in Zaporizhzhia region,” added the deputy minister.
At the same time, she said that about 200 more are under construction, and around 180 facilities are planned to be commissioned by the end of the year.
