Ukrainian patents, trademarks, and other intellectual property (IP) assets will be integrated into international databases of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which are used worldwide. This became possible thanks to the Agreement on the Exchange and Dissemination of Intellectual Property Data signed by the Ukrainian National Office for Intellectual Property and Innovations (UKRNOIP) and WIPO.
Deputy Minister of Economy for Digital Development, Digital Transformation and Digitalization Oleksandr Tsybort announced this following a meeting with WIPO Director General Daren Tang during the WIPO Assemblies of Member States in Geneva.
The integration of Ukrainian IP assets into WIPO databases will allow foreign partners and investors to more easily discover Ukrainian inventions and brands, enable Ukrainian companies to present their intellectual property globally, and help researchers verify and protect their work within the international system.
"For Ukraine, cooperation with WIPO has a practical dimension. We view intellectual property as a tool for innovation, investment, and economic recovery. This agreement is a step from declarations to concrete solutions: Ukrainian ideas will become more visible globally, while our entrepreneurs and researchers will find it easier to enter international markets," Oleksandr Tsybort said.
According to him, the next step will be the technical implementation of the agreement, including the coordination of data exchange formats, update cycles, and integration with WIPO databases.
During the meeting, the Ukrainian side thanked WIPO for its updated report on support for Ukraine’s innovation and creative sectors. The report reflects both the impact of the war and the resilience of Ukraine’s intellectual property system: applications continue to be submitted, institutions remain operational, and authors and inventors continue their activities. Ukraine is interested in maintaining this reporting format and practical cooperation within the mandate of the WIPO Assemblies of Member States.
The parties also agreed to continue cooperation on implementing the National Intellectual Property Strategy until 2030 and to strengthen interaction with WIPO’s relevant departments, including the Transition and Developed Countries Division (TDC), the WIPO Academy, and the WIPO Judicial Institute.
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for developing the international intellectual property system. Ukraine cooperates with WIPO in areas including the development of the national IP system, digitalization, support for innovation, and the creative industries.
