Ukrainian farmers warn of food crisis amid fertilizer import shortages

The All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council (VAR), representing the interests of 1,300 medium and small agricultural enterprises across Ukraine, appealed to Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Oleg Kiper, urging them to urgently resolve the issue of importing mineral nitrogen fertilizers.

The appeal emphasizes that the situation on the mineral fertilizer market is worsening due to shortages, which could soon lead to a sharp decline in crop yields.

“The key factor is the ban on importing not only ammonium nitrate grade A, which is indeed explosive, but also other nitrogen fertilizers that are completely safe,” the letter states.

VAR stresses that Ukraine is currently fully dependent on imported mineral fertilizers, and fertilization takes place precisely during this season.

“Without this, it is impossible to secure future harvests. If this issue is not urgently resolved, next year the country will face a 30% reduction in yields of key crops and, consequently, a food crisis,” VAR warns.

Farmers are calling on the government and regional authorities to immediately return to this issue and ensure the unblocking of imports through Ukrainian seaports for at least the main mineral fertilizers: UAN, ammonium sulfate, urea, potassium chloride, superphosphate, and NPK blends 10-26-26, 8-20-30, 18-18-18, 20-20-20.

“We hope for support and believe that together we can avoid yield losses and preserve the fertility of Ukrainian soils,” the farmers emphasize.
