A week ago, the European Commission began preparing new sanctions targeting Russia's fossil fuel imports. This was announced at a briefing in Brussels by European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho.

When asked about the EU's assessment of sanctions on Russian energy and U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s statement on using energy sanctions to pressure Russia into negotiations, Pinho said:

"We have been working on this and, in fact, we have imposed sanctions on Russian energy since the beginning of the war."

She clarified that these sanctions aim to gradually reduce the EU's dependence on Russian fossil fuels.

"From our side, on the EU side, we have introduced several packages. We are now discussing the 16th package, which will also impact the energy sector and contribute to the gradual phase-out of our fossil fuel imports from Russia," Pinho emphasized.
