Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has warned that even after a potential peace agreement in Ukraine, Russia’s aggressive policies will remain unchanged. He believes Europe must prepare for a long-term threat, reassess its security framework, increase defense spending, strengthen NATO, and maintain close cooperation with the U.S., according to Decode39.
Crosetto emphasized that Russia will remain in a state of war, using threats as tools of pressure and destabilization. He urged the EU not only to boost military investments but also to develop standardized armed forces while continuing to rely on U.S. protection and nuclear deterrence. He considers the transatlantic partnership the foundation of Europe’s security.
According to him, NATO remains the only reliable guarantee of stability and Ukraine’s future security architecture. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni shares this view, having previously stated the need to provide Kyiv with security guarantees similar to those of the North Atlantic Alliance.
European experts support this stance. Political analyst Nicu Popescu warns that many in Europe underestimate the danger posed by Russia, which is not only military but also threatens the stability of European institutions. He insists that the EU must become a serious military power capable of deterring potential threats.
Experts caution that hesitation or a lack of unity among EU nations could have severe consequences. Europe’s real test lies not in declarations but in concrete actions: increasing defense budgets, creating interoperable European forces, and reinforcing NATO’s eastern flank. These measures will help prepare for future crises and affirm Europe’s strength and reliability as a partner within the alliance.
