The state of emergency in Moldova, introduced due to the energy crisis in the unrecognized Transnistria, has ended. It will not be extended.
This was announced by the Prime Minister of Moldova, Dorin Recean.
"Today marks the end of the 60-day state of emergency, which will not be extended. At this stage, the necessary conditions have been created to ensure that the Transnistrian region receives natural gas without the need for a state of emergency," Recean wrote.
According to the Prime Minister, the introduction of the state of emergency was necessary to allow the purchase of gas and electricity after Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian gas.
He also added that during a meeting of Moldova's Emergency Commission, a decision was made to compensate the increased energy tariffs for the population. Additionally, the company "Energocom" will compensate 30 million euros for purchasing gas for the left bank of the Dniester and electricity for the right bank during the state of emergency.
- After the cessation of gas supplies from Russia on January 1, 2025, central heating was turned off in cities of Transnistria. Industrial enterprises suspended operations. Additionally, rolling power outages were introduced on the left bank of the Dniester.
- On January 24, the "authorities" of Transnistria stated that the region's gas reserves would last only for a few days, and the coal reserves for electricity production at the Moldovan DRES (power station) would last until February 16–17 at most.
- On January 27, the Moldovan authorities offered Transnistria gas supply until February 10 through a €30 million EU grant in exchange for free electricity from the Moldovan DRES (Kuchurgan, Transnistria) during this period. On February 1, Moldovagas delivered the first batch of gas to the unrecognized republic of Transnistria.
