In 2024, Ukrainian vessels operating in the area of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) harvested 19,980 tons of valuable Antarctic bioresources. This is a 54% increase compared to 2023 (12,945 tons) and a 107% increase compared to 2022 (9,659 tons).
2024 harvest results:
- 19,075 tons of Antarctic krill
- 905 tons of Antarctic toothfish
Five vessels under the Ukrainian flag were involved in the fishing operations:
- "SIMEIZ", "KOREIZ", "CALIPSO", and "MARIGOLDS" – toothfish campaign
- "MORE SODRUZHESTVA" – Antarctic krill fishing
Economic contribution:
The fishery entities paid over 7.2 million UAH to local budgets for the special use of aquatic bioresources. This is 1.1 million UAH more than in 2023.
For reference: CCAMLR is an intergovernmental organization responsible for implementing the provisions of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. It oversees industrial and scientific research activities within the areas covered by the Convention. Ukraine has been a member of CCAMLR since the adoption of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine's resolution on 04.02.1994 No. 3937-XII.
In the CCAMLR's area of responsibility, national catch quotas are not established, and the catch of aquatic bioresources is conducted according to the Olympic principle, meaning fishing continues until the total allowable catch limit for a specific subarea is exhausted.
The mentioned limits, fishing seasons, requirements for fishing gear, and conditions for conducting fisheries within CCAMLR's area of responsibility are established by the relevant Conservation Measures of CCAMLR.
