A Taiwanese citizen, Wu Chung-ta (吳忠達), a volunteer in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, was killed as a result of shelling by the Russian Armed Forces in the Luhansk region.
According to reports from the CNA news agency, Wu Chung-ta, originally from Kaohsiung, previously served in the Taiwanese Army's Special Forces Command. He joined the Foreign Legion of Ukraine's Territorial Defense in 2023 and later became a part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, fighting on the front lines.
The death of the soldier was confirmed by the Deputy Spokesperson of Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hsiao Kuan-wei (蕭光偉).
"The Ministry has contacted the family of the deceased soldier in Taiwan and promised to provide any necessary assistance regarding matters related to his death," the statement said.
Wu Chung-ta is the second Taiwanese soldier to die fighting for Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022. The first was 25-year-old Tseng Sheng-guang (曾聖光), who fell in November 2022 while serving in the International Legion of Ukraine’s Territorial Defense.
Reports indicate that other Taiwanese citizens continue to fight against Russian aggression, with the participation of at least six confirmed volunteers.
