The Ukrainian defense technology cluster Brave1 and Rakuten Group, a leading global technology company headquartered in Japan, have announced a joint initiative to support Ukrainian defense tech manufacturers. The first stage of cooperation will be the participation of a Ukrainian delegation at DSEI Japan, the only large-scale defense technology exhibition in Japan, taking place May 21–23. Further steps may include potential collaboration with the Japanese government and other partners.

Rakuten is one of the companies that has demonstrated strong support for Ukraine since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. This reflects Japan’s overall stance toward the Ukrainian people, their economic stability, and post-war recovery.

Rakuten has a significant presence in Ukraine, and its messenger app Viber is well known to every Ukrainian. In 2024, Rakuten opened an office in Kyiv and became a resident of Diia.City. After exploring cooperation opportunities, Brave1 and Rakuten decided to start their partnership with participation in DSEI Japan.

Since the start of the Russian invasion, the global landscape of defense technologies has undergone radical changes. Ukraine has become a key catalyst of these shifts by innovatively applying civilian technologies such as FPV drones and software in military affairs. Brave1 and Rakuten will continue to cooperate to support Ukrainian companies. In the future, both sides plan to expand this cooperation by involving the Japanese government and other partners, fostering the development of defense and dual-use technologies in both countries.
