The increase in the number of airstrikes and the use of guided aerial bombs on the southern axis is linked to the Russian tactics of striking from high altitude to prepare the terrain for assault operations.
This was stated by the spokesperson for the Southern Defense Forces, Vladyslav Voloshyn.
“Even though the weather here may often be unfavorable for flying, Russian bombers take off from Russian territory, from Russian airfields,” Voloshyn said.
According to him, aircraft gain significant altitude before carrying out strikes.
“When they approach the combat zone, they climb to an altitude of 10,000 to 13,000 meters and from there carry out GAB (guided bombs) strikes,” the spokesperson explained.
Voloshyn added that for the Russian forces, the key factor is weather conditions at their home airfields.
“For them, the main thing is that the weather at their airfields is good enough to conduct flights,” he noted.
The spokesperson emphasized that the purpose of such airstrikes is to inflict maximum destruction on settlements near the line of contact — “to cause as much damage as possible to settlements located close to the combat line, destroying buildings and structures that could be used to hold the defense.”
Voloshyn also said that the Russian forces are attempting to destroy Ukrainian defensive fortifications ahead of assaults.
“Before conducting assault operations, they create a ‘scorched earth’ to enable the advance of these assault groups,” the spokesperson concluded.
