On July 19, the National Museum of Taras Shevchenko in Kyiv will open the exhibition of war photography titled "Through Her Eyes." It features works by Ukrainian female photographers captured during the full-scale invasion.
The exhibition showcases works created by three women with diverse backgrounds and professions. Curator Iryna Boyko notes that besides the shared theme of their works, these photographers possess the ability to capture subtle glimpses of light amidst the darkness of war.
For instance, Vasilina Vrublevska, known for her fashion and reportage photography, including the cover of the first issue of Vogue Ukraine Edition since the invasion, explores the emotional essence of moments captured in her photographs.
Iva Sidash, whose work appears in publications like Financial Times, Spiegel, Business Insider, Ukraїner, and Reporters, brings an international perspective to the exhibition. Anastasiia Verbova (Verbova Doshchychka), head of the press service for the "Vovky da Vinchi" battalion, documents frontline events. These artists have documented the reality of wartime in various locations, including Irpin and Moshchun in Kyiv region, Kupyansk and Mala Rohan in Kharkiv region, Kostiantynivka and Toretsk in Donetsk region, Lviv, and the rehabilitation center in Staten Island, New York (USA).
The project is curated by Iryna Boyko, with the initiative supported by Ukrainian philanthropist Olga Sanden. "Photography can instantly capture reality, making it a key medium since the invasion began," says Olga Sanden. "It allows us to vividly depict the realities of wartime, engage with the photographer's perspective, share the artist's feelings, and connect with the individuals depicted in their work. Documenting this reality is crucial."
The exhibition will run until August 4, 2024.
